Soul, jazz, and funk are three of the musical genres one can use to describe Azania’s music. Azania (pronounced Azanya) was born in Boston, but spent her formative years in Geneva, Switzerland, where her mother worked for the United Nations. She started singing professionally at the age of fourteen, and worked with many different bands traveling all over Europe. “Those years were great; I got to sing everything from jazz, to funk, to rock and ballads.”
She gained further fame in France when she won the French TV competition, ‘Graines de Star,” an American Idol-style show, and was heralded as “the next Whitney Houston.” Azania counts Whitney Houston as her major musical idol.
After hundreds of concerts and performing in major music festivals in Europe, Azania decided to make her way to the US two years ago. “The US is the ultimate challenge, and the biggest market. I love the spirit here.” Azania is currently working on a new album which will be released in 2014 and is also performing shows.
In addition to her music, Azania is equally passionate about her work with the organization All As One (allasone.org), a Sierra Leonean charity that is dedicated to providing the orphaned children of Sierra Leone a loving home, medical care, and schooling. “So many children were orphaned during and following the 10-year civil war, the goal is to provide them with a place they can call home,” said Azania. AAO provides shelter, medical care, education, meals, clothes, social activities and love for the children. A dollar a day can literally save a child’s life.
Throughout her journey as an artist, Azania has made it a point to stay true to her artistry and not let the ups and down of the music industry keep her down. Her advice for aspiring musicians is “No matter what your circumstances or problems are, instead of worrying about what’s wrong in your life and your challenges, focus your energy on what you do have, be deeply grateful for it and do the best you can with those things to move forward.”
Recording artist and producer Jeremiah Abiah, who is producing Azania’s new album, said “Azania has quickly garnered the kind of tenacity one needs to be successful here. Not only is she beautiful but she is a talented songstress aiming to make a difference. As the producer of her new album, we are working to heighten her career and give the world what they’ve been waiting for.”
